Engineered hardwood done right
Engineered hardwood is real wood over a dimensionally stable plywood core. It looks and feels like [solid hardwood](/real-solid-hardwood-flooring) underfoot, but it won't cup, gap, or buckle the way solid wood can when humidity swings - which makes it the right call for basements, slab-foundation homes, kitchens, and rooms with radiant heating.
Mobile Floors & More stocks engineered hardwood from several of the mills that supply designers and builders throughout Tennessee & Texas, and neighbors have shared their experience with us in our [reviews](/reviews).

Why homeowners choose engineered
Engineered hardwood gives you most of the benefits of solid wood without the climate sensitivity - a real plus in a region that swings from humid summers to the occasional winter ice storm. See the towns we cover on our [service area](/service-areas) page.
- Stable on concrete slabs and over radiant heat
- Available in wider planks (up to 9") than solid wood can deliver
- Pre-finished from the factory with aluminum-oxide topcoats
- Floating, glue-down, or nail-down installation - whatever your subfloor needs
- Refinishable once or twice depending on wear-layer thickness

Most engineered hardwood we install is oak, but maple, walnut, hickory, and exotic species are all available. Plank widths run from a classic 3" up to designer 9"-wide boards. Finishes range from clear matte to wire-brushed, hand-scraped, fumed, and reactive-stained looks.

Professional installation
Our installers assess your subfloor first - moisture testing on concrete, joist inspection on plywood, flatness checks everywhere. From there we recommend floating, glue-down, or nail-down based on what will perform best. Every quote includes baseboard removal and reinstall, transitions to adjacent rooms, and full disposal of your existing floor, the same standard we hold on every [flooring installation](/flooring-installation) we run.

Engineered Hardwood - frequently asked questions
Yes - if the wear layer is 3mm or thicker, it can be sanded and refinished once or twice. Thinner wear layers (1-2mm) should be screened and recoated instead of fully sanded, which our [hardwood refinishing](/hardwood-refinishing) crew can walk you through.
Water-resistant, not waterproof. It handles the occasional spill far better than solid wood, but standing water from a dishwasher leak or burst pipe should still be cleaned up right away.
Yes - this is one of engineered hardwood's biggest advantages. We follow manufacturer guidelines on subfloor temperature and acclimation to prevent gapping, especially important given how much our humidity shifts between seasons.
Floating installs faster and is easier to repair. Glue-down feels more solid underfoot and is quieter. Over concrete slabs, which is most new construction around Tennessee & Texas, we typically recommend glue-down; over plywood, either works well.
