Real & Solid Hardwood Flooring - frequently asked questions
Properly installed solid hardwood lasts 50 to 100+ years. It can be sanded and refinished 6 to 10 times, so it routinely outlives the mortgage and adds real resale value.
Not directly - solid hardwood needs to be nailed into a wood subfloor. Over a slab, we either install plywood first or recommend [engineered hardwood](/engineered-hardwood), which is dimensionally stable and glue-down friendly.
Prefinished planks arrive sealed at the factory, which means a faster install with a slight micro-bevel between boards. Site-finished floors are sanded and coated in your home for a perfectly flat, custom-color result.
Solid hardwood reacts to moisture and temperature swings, so we generally steer radiant-heat jobs toward engineered hardwood instead. If solid wood is a must, we'll specify narrow widths and rift-and-quartered cuts to keep movement to a minimum.
